  • Alvaro Silva

    Mindful Brass Camp - Audition Prep Camp

    Alvaro Silva, originally from Santiago, Chile, embarked on a transformative journey upon arriving in the U.S. at the age of 6. Throughout his life, Alvaro has delved into the realms of neuroplasticity, mindfulness, and the flow of musical experiences, shaping his profound passion for music. Experiencing the impact of public school music programs firsthand, Alvaro is committed to ensuring equitable opportunities for all learners in his classroom, firmly believing in the potential of music to enhance cognitive abilities.

    A graduate of Shepherd University with a degree in Music Education, Alvaro furthered his expertise by earning a Masters of Education in Kodaly Music Education from Loyola University. Currently pursuing a doctorate in Music Education at Boston University, he focuses his research on mindfulness and flow in music, emphasizing the transformative power of music education. Expressing gratitude to the music educator community, Alvaro acknowledges their tireless efforts in imparting the joy of music knowledge to students, irrespective of their backgrounds.

  • Andrew Kullberg

    Weekly Summer Chorus

    Andrew, a native of Silver Spring, MD, discovered his passion for music at an early age, honing his skills through private lessons and active participation in various musical endeavors in both church and school settings. Fueled by inspiration from his high school band director, he pursued a career in music education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education with a piano concentration from Eastern University in St. Davids, PA. In 2012, Andrew commenced his teaching journey at Meadow Hall Elementary School in Rockville.

    In 2016, Montgomery County expanded its Honors Chorus offerings, and Andrew, having initially served as the piano accompanist for Central Honors Chorus, transitioned to the conductor's podium in 2018. Since then, he has led the ensemble to deliver captivating performances, showcasing a diverse repertoire from around the globe. Simultaneously, Andrew has contributed to various congregations, with a focus on sacred music, and currently serves as the Director of Music Ministries at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bethesda, MD. Holding a Master of Music in Music Education from the University of Maryland, he brings a wealth of knowledge to his role as a general music teacher at Flower Valley Elementary School. Beyond his musical pursuits, Andrew enjoys cooking, cycling, exploring new languages, and sharing life with his wife, Sarah Anne, a talented singer and actor. Together, they reside in Rockville, MD.

    Jamin Morden

    Mindful Brass Camp - Weekly Summer Band

    Jamin Morden, the Music Director of the Washington Metropolitan Gamer's Symphony Orchestra, stands out as a key contributor to the ensemble's artistic landscape. Renowned for his exceptional arranging skills, Jamin showcased his talent by creating a symphonic UNDERTALE suite that premiered in April 2017. His musical journey began at Northwestern University, where he pursued a dual major in French Horn Performance and Music Education, setting the stage for a versatile career.

    After earning a master's degree in French Horn Performance from Yale University, Jamin relocated to Maryland, where he embarked on a fulfilling career teaching instrumental music in Montgomery County Public Schools. With a musical footprint extending beyond the classroom, Jamin actively participates in Symphony of the Potomac and the Maryland Band Directors’ Band. Additionally, he enriches the musical landscape as the French horn player in the Chesapeake Brass Authority Brass Quintet. With over a decade of experience, Jamin has dedicated himself to teaching elementary instrumental music in Montgomery County Public Schools and offering private horn lessons, leaving an indelible mark on the musical education landscape.

    Programs Director

    Meet Jeff Johns, a dedicated musical educator hailing from Jeannette, Pennsylvania. Jeff's musical journey began in 4th grade with the trombone, later adding the tuba in 6th grade. A graduate of West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Jeff furthered his education with a Master of Music in Wind Band Conducting & Pedagogy from the American Band College.

    Since 2004, Jeff has contributed significantly to Montgomery County Public Schools, serving as an assistant band & orchestra director, director of instrumental music at Northwood High School, and later, a beloved figure at Farquhar Middle School. With over 15 years of experience in providing private lessons, Jeff has nurtured talented students, achieving recognition in prestigious ensembles and earning scholarships.

    This fall, Jeff returns to middle school as the band and orchestra director at Tilden Middle School, marking a new chapter in his impactful career. Beyond the classroom, Jeff is a founding member of the Maryland Band Directors’ Band and an active participant in the Chesapeake Brass Authority, demonstrating his commitment to making music a vibrant part of his life. When not immersed in music and education, Jeff enjoys quality time with his wife and daughter, outdoor adventures on his bike, and creative endeavors with Lego bricks. Jeff Johns brings the joy of music and harmony to life in every note and lesson.
